Background

The measurement system is the window of quality in manufacturing companies. Without proper functioning of the measuring system (instruments, operators, and methods of measurement) it is impossible to obtain quality pieces.

In many companies, the measurement system is confused with instruments. The measurement system is more than a measurement system, because it consists of instruments, operators, and measurement methods.

The study of repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) is the most important of all studies because it tells us whether our measurement system is suitable for measuring our process. When an R&R study shows a 30% higher result, it indicates that the measurement system is unacceptable. This does not necessarily means that the instrument measured incorrectly. The cause of an elevated R&R% may lie in the instrument, in operators, or in the measurement method.

In many companies, this happens that when a high R&R% is obtained, the instrument is sent for calibration. This is not always the right solution, because the R&R study evaluates the measurement system and not just the measurement instrument. To find the true cause of a high R&R%, the graphs of the study should be analyzed, such as ranges, means, runs, graphics, etc. These graphs tell exactly what caused the problem.

Description of the Solution

With QGAGE this is very easy. With just a few clicks you will get the graphical analysis with recommendations that will allow discovering the real cause of the high R&R%. Often the cause lies in the measurement method. Imagine two operators who come from different companies and enter yours. Both have experience in using the instrument but they do not measure in the same manner. This causes a variation in measurement results that is reflected in a high R&R% value. If the graphics are not analyzed, your company will probably send the instrument for calibration, when in fact the instrument is in perfect condition. Graphical analysis saves resources by making correct decisions.

Another very important element is the measurement uncertainty value. When we measure a single piece several times with the same instrument, the results may be different. There is always variation. So when we report a measurement value, we must take into account that variation, which is no more than measurement uncertainty. QGAGE allows incorporating several sources of uncertainty such as resolution, threshold mobility, repeatability, reproducibility, hysteresis, temperature, and pattern.

Control of Instruments and Patterns

QGAGE allows managing instruments with log information that displays everything that has happened, including damages, repairs, exits, and entrances . . . plus being warned by email when an instrument enters or is out of its place. It allows planning calibrations and R&R studies as well as effective control, carried out through delay notices.
